The first Finnish south pole expedition 2008

The Finnish expedition will ski unsupported to the South Pole in December 2008. The expedition's journey across the World's coldest continent, Antarctica, is over 1000km long and will take about 50 days to complete.

During this time the two-man expedition will be fighting against extremely low temperatures, freezing winds and physical exhaustion.

There's only a handful of people who have skied to both Poles worldwide. When reaching the South Pole, Kari Poppis Suomela will be the 12th person in the world to reach both poles unsupported.

Finland to get a large office complex utilising solar energy

Plans have been drawn to construct a chain of four office buildings, with solar panels covering the south-facing walls of the complex, in the vicinity of the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport.

This way some of the energy needed by the complex will be generated on the spot without putting a strain on the environment. The project is the largest of its kind in Finland, possibly even in the entire Nordic region.

As yet, the Vantaa project is still on the drawing board, and no details are available of the quantity of energy that could be produced. Much will depend on how densely the panels are installed on the south-facing walls of the 30,000 square-metre complex.

MultiTouch screens

Finnish company called MultiTouch provides bleeding edge technology that enables the construction of large multi-touch displays, which can be either LCD or projection based. Their technology has been designed from the ground up to scale from as small as a laptop display and right up to and beyond huge displays measuring 20m (66 feet) across. It is also the first multi-touch technology, which not only scales so large but also works in almost all conditions from daylight through to complete darkness, even if the users are wearing gloves.

Once again, the product itself is excellent, but why does the viral marketing material look like this YouTube video? As you could have switched of the lights, showed just hands and played some futuristic background music like the competitor does in here.

Music is complemented with theatre at the Yoyogi Park concert on 9 August; if you like the latest Taratino movie soundtracks, you probably like Angelica Kult *TrashGang*.

The festivities at Alppipuisto end with Elmu‘s public festival on 17 and 18 August. The Live Music Association Elmu celebrates its 30th anniversary, don't miss Pintandwefall, Mattip, I walk the line and The Micragirls.

ANTON CORBIJN - Retrospective 21.5.-31.8.2008

Since the 1970s, Anton Corbijn’s (1955, the Netherlands) photographs have shaped our image of many musicians and other artists. The ANTON CORBIJN - Retrospective (Tennis Palace Art Museum) presents Corbijn’s four key series of photographs from 1976 to 2002. In addition to photography, Anton Corbijn is known for his music videos and his award-winning film Control (2007).

Anton Corbijn began photographing at rock concerts and for music magazines in the 1970s. Since then he has broadened his range of subjects to other artists, including actors, film directors, painters and writers. Over the years, the documentary approach of his early photography has changed to more conceptual ones: first to well- considered portraits, then to staged paparazzi pictures. The most recent series seen in the exhibition consists of self-portraits.

Identity and roles are at the core of Anton Corbijn’s work. As U2’s Bono put it, “Anton doesn’t photograph who you are, he photographs who you might be.”

Open: Tue-Sun 11 a.m. – 8.30 p.m, Mon closed.
Address: Tennis Palace Art Museum, Salomonkatu 15 (near the Bus Station), 00100 Helsinki.

Hidden wine cellars of Helsinki

Wine consumption is growing fast in Finland. Nice wine cellars try to meet the higher demand. Here is a list of few good ones to try in Helsinki (most of the links are in Finnish only): G. W. Sundmans, Olo wine cabinet, La Bodega, Carelia, CWC, Sörnäisten viinikellari, Wine cellar of Ruttopuisto.

Anyway, if you prefer more traditional. Try Helsinki Vodka. Look at their slogan: "How Finns relax".
What?

Finnish electro scene: beat beat beat

Is it burning your ears or not?
Try and decide: Eero Johannes, KA SO RE, JESSE (album release party @ Korjaamo 12.4.08).

Excellent stuff.

Postres: Restaurant of the Year gained Michelin star

The best Finnish restaurant of the year 2008 is awarded to Postres. La Société des Gastronomes Finlandais (Suomen Gastronominen seura) awards annually the restaurant of the year. For some reason this has been correlating with the Michelin star nominations in past few years. No exception this year.

Postres gained it's first Michelin star this year. As did another newcomer Carma. Chez Dominique holds on to its two stars and Demo preserves the star it gained last year. G.W. Sundmans has lost its accolade, meaning that Helsinki (and Finland as a whole) now has four starred Michelin eateries.

The Sommelier Blog summarizes this nicely: "All the star restaurants in Helsinki are now small privately owned, it was not actually a big surprise to me that G.W. Sundmans lost their star. I think that this is good wake for Royal Ravintolat to sharpen up and really start thinking in new way and making their restaurants more different from each other.".

"I want to be a DJ (original mix)" is a very catching tune by Finnish Roberto Rodriguez. Tune is almost 2 years old but still very very catching as are most of his tunes. Listen yourself.

Utopia coming real?

Live above the sea! Nice plans were introduced by the construction company YIT couple years ago: residential nucleus is formed of totally 7 buildings by the sea. This year 2008 the first two buildings are ready, BUT the closer look reveals these two buildings are yes near by the sea but not above sea. Hopefully these "above the sea" apartments are built also in the near future!

Echosystem - brazil funk som de Helsinki

Echosystem is a 7-member Orchestra from Helsinki, playing funky tunes spiced up with sunny Brazilian rhythms. In a fresh way, they combine the Brazilian tradition with jazz, funk and contemporary club music producing a unique sound that varies from chic latinjazz to hectic breakbeat.

Their debut album "Madaga" is now released in Japan also!

Pingstate - Art of a Visual Community, Book 1

Pingstate - Art of a Visual Community, Book 1 is a collection. It presents 42 rising stars who work with pictures on both sides of the line that moved an inch. These healthy, playing adults are involved in developing a visual language for 21st century Finland and they made this book free of harassment by parents, cops or clients. It was born as a collective effort and on its own terms, because it wanted to.

Pinsgstate.nu is a web community, the members of which work in visual culture, often in a commercial context.

New Finnish Documentaries @ Docpoint film festival

Docpoint film festival does the reality check: 23.-27.1.08. There are bunch of new Finnish documentaries available. Shame I missed the Arto Halonen's Shadow of the Holy book. It's a film about the Ruhnama, also known as The Book of Soul, written by now deceased Turkmenistan's dictator Saparmurat Niazov.

Jani Leinonen @ Galleria Krista Mikkola 8.2.–2.3.2008

Diamonds are forever

Would you like to live forever? Now it's possible, well in a way. Algordanza is offering a new kind of burial. After the cremation the ashes of the beloved person are delivered to Algordanza Finland (link in Finnish) and they produce the high class and sertified diamond out of the ash. Creepy.

www.in-drunk-you-are-blockhead.fi

Old propaganda campaigns are back, but with more street credibility than ever. The on-going "in-drunk-you-are-blockhead" campaign is targeted to teens&youngsters who tend to get too drunk too often in Finland.

Test the simple game and watch the campaign film on the site! Also the posters are awesome. Model vomiting in her handbag and clubber pissing in his pants. Cool or embarrased?

Surpringly the campaign is produced by the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry. Federation promote the interests of producers of beer, cider, long drinks, soft drinks and mineral waters in Finland.

I thought their interest is to sell drinks as much as possible! But hey we live in Finland. Moral is the keyword here. Good.

Unique design hotels in Helsinki

In year 2008 upcoming design hotels will stimulate the Helsinki hotel scene: Former red-light brothel house (okay it was over 100 years ago) is renewed and new Hotel Helena (Pohjoisesplanadi 5) will be open in autumn 2008 (source: Kauppalehti, in Finnish). EDIT 2013: Olo (a Michelin star restaurant) will move in to Pohjoisesplanadi 5 in August 2013. The plans of Hotel Helena did not become reality at all.

Earlier I mentioned about the upcoming (fall 2009) loft-style rooms of Hotel Linna and alternatives to ordinary hotel stay (guest house Kolo & Maja). EDIT 2013: Hotel Linna is now GLO Art Hotel and loft-style rooms did not become reality? Maybe because of new hotels Haven and Fabian?

The largest private restaurant corporation in Finland Royal Ravintolat Ltd have noticed the demand for unique Hotels and is planning (article in Finnish) to launch a competitor to GLO, Klaus K and old prison Hotel Katajanokka. New hotel Haven will open during the year 2008 to Unioninkatu 17.

We'll see if the plans of the Alvar Aalto & Artek hotel (article in Finnish) will become real by the year 2010. Design hotel by world-class architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron would be a nice new landmark. EDIT 2013: Helsinki City Council rejected Katajanokka hotel project in 2010.

Other unique hotels to mention: Totally new concept was developed for Hotel Helka in 2006 - inspired by Finnish Design and Finnish nature. This theme can be experienced everywhere - in furnishing, service and music.
